| Weight Loss How you lose weight is simple. You just need to use more calories than you are eating. Achieving it is much more difficult because it involves changing behaviours. Often these have been built up over many years and for very complex reasons. Most weight loss plans concentrate on reducing the calories eaten; whether it is by counting calories, avoiding certain food groups or eating prescribed meal replacement drinks. These are doomed to failure because they do not address the underlying problem that gave rise to the calorie imbalance in the first place. Using running as part of a weight loss strategy works on the other part of the equation; increasing the calories used. Once running has become part of your lifestyle you have achieved a permanent change in behaviour that will alter the calories in/calorie used balance and can lead to permanent weight loss. Interestingly, most people find that running also helps them to think differently about what they eat and this results in changes to eating patterns that help maintain a healthy weight. If you are severely overweight you will have to approach a running regime very cautiously. However, this can be a benefit as slow, gradual progress is much easier to maintain in the long run. If you want some plain and simple advice on eating healthily then read Ed & Phil's Fit Food, available from some running shops and online at www.edandphil.co.uk If you have any doubts about starting an exercise regime please consult your doctor before you start. | |
